The Pearl

Okay, one more and then that’s it for a while. The Pearl is my twenty-ninth game, and it’s a puzzle game – probably my most difficult yet.

I don’t want to spoil too much here in the post, but I think I should say a few things. First, this game has no auto-save feature; you have to save manually. This is because, unlike my other puzzle games, it is absolutely possible for you to make the wrong move and ruin everything. A knowledgeable player could render the game unbeatable in seconds; it’s really quite easy. So remember to save before quitting. Also, remember that you can undo if something goes horribly wrong. You can’t undo once you’ve quit, though, so be careful not to save after you’ve already ruined everything. It’s a tricky balance, but that’s why I gave you three files to work with.

On another note, this game is not actually related to Joiner, even though the player character looks the same. I just couldn’t come up with anything better for the art. Yes, they’re both Sokoban-style puzzle games, but I’m sure you’ll find them to be quite different in terms of gameplay.

I do expect this to be my last game for a while, because I’m going to be quite busy with other people’s games. Yooka-Laylee just came out, it turns out that Poi released a couple months ago and I missed it, Snake Pass sounds intriguing, and A Hat in Time will probably release by the time I’m done with all those. And that’s just 3D platformers! Breath of the Wild is demanding my attention right this second, and apparently Rime is coming out next month! So you’ll likely not hear from me for a while. It seems a decent time for games. I do hope you’ll have some free time to play The Pearl. Have fun!

  1. Amazing! Inspired! Unprecedented! Psychotic! I don’t enough adjectives to adequately describe this game! I really enjoyed this one. The difficulty was high enough that it took me several days to play through to the final ending. However, I was always eager to get back to it because I was always making progress. I made another game changing breakthrough every day, and it was the ongoing realization of new depth that made The Pearl so entertaining. Truthfully, I can’t remember another game that has so many different layers to its gameplay. Magnificent!

    1. Thanks! I’m so glad you liked it. This one was a lot of fun to design, so I’m happy to hear that it was as much fun to play!
